A model of the Mariner-C spacecraft seems to float in the darkness of space in this photo from a June 1964 Conference on New Technology at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. Mariner-C and Mariner-D were identical spacecraft designed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to fly by Mars and photograph the Martian surface. Alfie Chandler, 20, was riding a scrambler-style bike on July 30 when he failed to stop for officers and continued to ride towards them. He narrowly missed one officer but hit another on the arm and leg which caused injuries which required surgery.
