Mr Burnham has released a video to say he backs Labour candidate Philip Berman, who is standing for the party in the upcoming Goldsmid ward by-election in Hove, on June 25.
The former mayor of Manchester is also standing in his own by-election for the Makerfield parliamentary constituency today (June 18).
He is widely expected to challenge Sir Keir Starmer for the leadership of the Labour Party if he is elected to parliament.
In a video released in support of Mr Berman, Mr Burnham said: “We’ve got two big by-elections coming up.
“I’m up on June 18, as you might know, in the Makerfield constituency. But I also know that Philip Berman is up in the Goldsmid by-election in Brighton on June 25.
“So one after the other, hoping for a Labour one-two here.
“I know all of the great work that Brighton and Hove Council have done.
“We’re great admirers of everything you do in Brighton here from the north and wish Philip all the very best.”
The Goldsmid by-election was triggered by the resignation of councillor and former mayor Jackie O’Quinn in May.
The other five candidates standing for election are Louis Bird (Conservative), Nadia Barton Ahmad (Green), Kim Leyland-Walker (Liberal Democrat), Luke Willmoth (Reform UK) and Glenn Kelly (Trade Union and Socialist Coalition).
Mr Berman said: “It’s great to get an endorsement from someone like Andy Burnham, who knows the value of local services and has been doing remarkable things in Greater Manchester.
“He recognises what Labour have been doing in Brighton and Hove on housing, cost of living and climate.
“And I’m standing here in my local Goldsmid ward in Hove, because this city deserves a councillor who will build on that record with ambition and urgency, not just maintain it.”
