Emmet Potter died following a single vehicle collision in the Derrycourtney Road area of Caledon on Saturday evening, April 25
The funeral for a man who died in a crash at the weekend heard that he “lived life and loved life”.
Emmet Potter died following a single vehicle collision in the Derrycourtney Road area of Caledon on Saturday evening, April 25. On Thursday, his funeral took place at St. Oliver Plunkett’s Church, Creggan in Co Tyrone.
He was described as a “loveable rogue” and someone “who loved a good party and a bit of fun”.
In his homily, Fr Peter McAnenly, Parish Priest of the Parish of Termonmaguirc, told the congregation: “I was just looking at some of the pictures of him in his home the other night and each of them tell their own story of a man who lived life and loved life, and someone who loved a good party and a bit of fun.
“Some of his brothers were saying that he was always a great man to spin a story and they said that very often the stories that Emmet would have been telling, you could have cut them in half. But in the words of his own mother, it was Claire herself that said that he was a lad who had a huge heart and he was a ‘loveable rogue’ and she said that he rarely left her or went off without hugging her.”
He added: “I’m sure that in the weeks to come there are many memories that will be treasured of Emmet, memories of special family times and memories of good times together.
“I’ve no doubt that those memories will be a source of great comfort and strength to all of you as you move on in life and in the weeks and months to come.”
The service also heard Fr McAnenly say the family described Emmet as a man who “could put his hands to anything”, working in a range of different areas and also enjoyed farming, in particular helping his uncle John.
Earlier this week, Darren Peter Andrew Callaghan, 38, from Ballynahatty Road, Fintona, appeared in Dungannon Magistrates Court charged with causing Mr Potter’s death by driving dangerously and while unfit through drink or drugs.
He is further accused of driving while disqualified, without insurance, fraudulent use of a vehicle registration mark and failing to wear a seatbelt. Bail was refused and Callaghan will appear again by video-link on 27 May.
