Adur District Council and Sussex Yacht Club are working together to unlock the delayed scheme, which would protect properties along the A259 Brighton Road in Shoreham from Ferry Bridge to Mariner Point.

The project has been held up by issues including public rights of way, site access, and design.

Councillor Jeremy Gardner, leader of Adur District Council, said: “This has been a very long process but I’m delighted with the way our discussions about the flood defences are now going with Sussex Yacht Club.

“We both agree that it’s absolutely vital that this wall is built to protect the homes and businesses in the low-lying section of the town.”

Progress has been made after West Sussex County Council confirmed the exact route of a public right of way through the site.

An amended planning application for the main flood gate, reflecting the correct right of way, is expected to go before Adur’s planning committee on Monday, August 4.

A full project report will be presented to Adur & Worthing Councils’ Joint Strategic Committee this autumn, covering final costs and a proposed construction timeline.

If approved, the scheme will deliver a robust steel-piled wall of concrete, brick and flint up to 2.2 metres high.

The flood wall would protect dozens of homes and businesses from the River Adur, which poses a growing threat during spring tides and storm surges.

Flood gates will be included to maintain access to the yacht club and public right of way.

A wide footpath is also planned, running alongside the A259.

Shoreham experienced severe flooding in April 2024 when the Adur burst its banks during a high spring tide.

Robin Stevenson, commodore of Sussex Yacht Club, said: “Since I took the helm of Sussex Yacht Club just six months ago, this project has quickly become a priority for me and my volunteer committee members.

“We are very much looking forward to removing obstacles and working closely with Adur District Council to finally deliver this critical piece of infrastructure for our local community.”
