The thunderstorm warning from the Met Office will be in place from 9pm tomorrow (July 18) until 6pm on Saturday (July 19).

Torrential rain and thunder are expected to reach the South during Friday evening. Frequent lightning, gusty winds, and large hail are also likely.

The warning is in place for both East and West Sussex, as well as affecting other areas in the south-east and across the country.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Thundery rain will reach the south of the warning area later Friday before spreading north to affect much of England through Saturday.

“Rain will likely be locally torrential, bringing 20-30 mm in less than an hour in many places, with 60-90 mm in less than three hours possible in a few places.

“Whilst rain will clear from the south of the area by early Saturday afternoon, further thunderstorms are likely to develop here.”

The warning follows weeks of sunshine, with only last weekend the UK Health Security Agency having issued an amber heat health alert.

The Met Office has warned the public to plan for disruptions to transport and travel, with spray and sudden flooding likely to cause difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

People should also expect delays and cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur.

There is also the risk of power cuts and flooding in some areas.
