Fire crews have finally stepped down following a blaze which ripped through a block of flats on Saturday morning – while police continue to investigate what caused it.

Emergency services were called to Crabble Hill in Dover after the fire was reported in the early hours – residents at 42 flats had to be evacuated.

Lisa Bones, 55, was asleep when the alarm was raised. She told KentOnline: “I heard an almighty explosion around 1am and saw flames hitting our windows, which I thought would come through.

“We got our clothes on and ran out of the building. We didn’t take anything with us and have only got the clothes we are wearing.”

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation, and 12 fire engines, two height vehicles, and specialist crews from a technical rescue team have all been involved in the operation.

But an update this evening from Kent Fire & Rescue says “firefighting operations are now complete”.

It added: “Crews made sure that there were no hotspots and Kent Police are now managing the building while further investigations into the cause take place.”
