The Environment Agency has issued 19 flood alerts across Sussex, with flooding expected near Hailsham on the Cuckmere and Bull Rivers.
Residents in Hellingly and Horsebridge have been warned to “act now” due to the rivers being “high and rising”.
Some roads may become impassable due to flooding in the area, including Mill Road and Church Road.
A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: “5mm of rain has been recorded at Cowbeech Saturday evening and Sunday morning.
“Another 5mm of rain is predicted before midday on Sunday. From 10:00 05/01/2025, flooding will affect fields, rural roads including Hammer Lane near Cowbeech, and properties on Mill Lane, Hellingly and at Grove Hill near Grovebridge Farm.

“From 14:00 05/01/2025, flooding will also affect Station Road, Church Lane and Church Road, Hellingly, including gardens and properties on those roads. Only showers are forecast Sunday afternoon and Monday.”
Those in the affected area should move your loved ones, pets and valuables to a safe place, move to higher ground or the upper floor of a building, turn off the gas, electricity and water in your home if it’s safe, put flood protection equipment in place, do as the emergency services tell you and help others if it’s safe to do so.
Flooding is possible in 18 other areas, which are:
- Climping Seafront,
- Lavant Stream at Havant,
- River Adur East Branch,
- River Adur West Branch,
- River Mole and its tributaries from Kinnersley Manor to South Hersham,
- Rivers Eden and Eden Brook,
- River Uck,
- Upper Ouse,
- Upper River Medway,
- Upper River Mole, Ifield Brook, Gatwick Stream and Burstow Stream,
- Combe Haven,
- Cuckmere River,
- River Beult from Pluckley and Bethersden to Stilebridge,
- River Rother and its tributaries from Turks Bridge to the Royal Military Canal,
- Rivers Tillingham and Brede,
- River Teise and Lesser Teise area from Horsmonden to Yalding,
- River Teise area from Lamberhurst to Goudhurst,
- Upper River Stour.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for East and West Sussex, with between 15 and 20mm of rain expected to fall.
