Gillingham defender Conor Masterson insists they remain confident of making the play-offs – as they hang onto hope following Friday’s draw.

The Gills moved up to seventh in the table after a goalless home match against Crewe Alexandra but are reliant on others dropping points to stay there.

More: Gillingham fade after a positive start

They visit Harrogate Town on Monday for their second match of the Easter weekend.

Masterson said: “I believe we can do it and we just have to go out and put a performance together because we have really good players in our dressing room who believe in each other.

“We will go to Harrogate feeling positive. If we win there then we are in with a really good chance of finishing in the play-offs.

“The last five games we have to put in serious performances to get where we want to get to, but I am confident in the lads and so are the management and staff and people around the players. Every day we are confident so we are looking forward to it.

“We want to be positive and with five left, that’s 15 points, big games and we want to be positive and win them.

“That game (on Friday) is gone now, onto the next one and we’ll stay positive because football changes very quickly, you win three points on Monday and results go your way, you could be two or three points clear, you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

League 2 table

Masterson helped keep Crewe quiet on Friday but at the other end the Gills struggled to make an impact, with the visiting keeper saving headers from Tim Dieng and Josh Andrews.

“It was a game of few chances,” said the defender.

“Crewe came with a game-plan to disrupt us and stop us and I thought they did that at times.

“First 20 minutes we really came out of the blocks and showed good intent, but it was a tight game and a fair result in the end.

“The two defences were very solid, and there weren’t many chances, I think they nullified us and we nullified them.

“It was a game of half chances and there was the wind factor in the game, overall we’re back up to seventh and that is good if we can go to Harrogate and get three points it will put us in a good position.”
