TfL buses are “guided” by the Mayor’s Transport Strategy and its target that 80 per cent of all journeys will be made on foot, by bike or public transport by 2041. Tiny things matter — for instance, one amino acid can completely alter the architecture of the cell. Researchers at the Universities of Göttingen and Warwick investigated the structure and mechanics of the main component of the cytoskeleton of the cell: a protein known as actin. Actin is found in all living cells where it has a range of important functions — from muscle contraction to cell signalling and cell shape. This protein comes in two different varieties termed “isoforms,” which are known as gamma actin and beta actin. The difference between the two proteins is miniscule, only a few amino…

Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain When NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover isn’t on the move, it works pretty well as a sundial, as seen in two black-and-white videos recorded on Nov. 8, the 4,002nd Martian day, or sol, of the mission. The rover captured its own shadow shifting across the surface of Mars using its black-and-white Hazard-Avoidance Cameras, or Hazcams. Instructions to record the videos were part of the last set of commands beamed up to Curiosity just before the start of Mars’ solar conjunction, a period when the sun is between Earth and Mars. Because plasma from the sun can interfere…

The study was published in Environmental Science & Technology.NOx storage reduction (NSR) is a promising approach to control NOx emissions from diesel vehicles, thus to address the growing global energy crisis and climate change. However, due to the improvement of engine technologies and frequent idling in traffic, the…
