The former star of Mad Men is currently married to his wife, Anna Osceola, and was previously linked to his ex and longtime partner, Jennifer Westfeldt. Before meeting Anna, Jon was known for leaning away from the idea of marriage. In 2012, the Top Gun: Maverick actor told Playboy that he didn’t have plans to exchange vows with anyone. “I don’t have a particularly defined example of marriage in my life,” he told the publication. “My parents…
Explaining the behavior of trained neural networks remains a compelling puzzle, especially as these models grow in size and sophistication. Like other scientific challenges throughout history, reverse-engineering how artificial intelligence systems work requires a substantial amount of experimentation: making hypotheses, intervening on behavior, and even dissecting large networks to examine individual neurons. To date, most successful experiments have involved large amounts of human oversight. Explaining every computation inside models the size of GPT-4 and larger will almost certainly require more automation — perhaps even using AI models themselves. Facilitating this timely endeavor, researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence…
Amongst the new employment laws expected to come into effect in 2024 is the Employment Relations (Flexible Working) Bill, which received Royal Assent and passed into law on 20 July 2023. Employees will: gain the right to make two flexible-working requests within any 12-month period, whereas they previously could only make one such request; and no longer have…
Credit: iScience (2023). DOI: 10.1016/j.isci.2023.108533 Africa is on fire. It has been for thousands of years. The continent contains more than 50% of the total area on Earth that is burning, on average, and there is no sign of it stopping; indeed, the migrating, hemisphere-hopping African wildfire season is steadily increasing. The fire is essentially feeding itself in a kind of feedback loop as aerosols, induced by the perpetual conflagration, interact with the climate. It’s a process that plays a critical role in the regulation of African ecosystems, reinforcing wildfires and paving the way for elevated fire seasons in subsequent…
