Trying to get off billionaire-owned social media, but don’t know where to start? A new app called Indigo is launching today to let users explore the open social web across multiple services, all under one roof. Decentralized social media is having a moment, as more people realize they want control over their algorithms, feeds, moderation choices, and other aspects of participating in online communities. However, there are multiple paths to choose from. Users can opt for decentralized servers that make up the social network Mastodon, built on the older ActivityPub protocol (also now used by Meta’s Threads), or they can…

“Artificial intelligence is not just for computer scientists anymore; it’s going to permeate every aspect of our lives and influence every business,” says MIT President Sally Kornbluth. The world is reaching an inflection point with artificial intelligence: over half of U.S. adults use generative AI — with 12 percent using it daily at work — and 88 percent of global organizations have integrated AI into at least one core function, up from 78 percent in 2024. AI knowledge is no longer optional for career growth, organizational leadership, and life. Yet, a growing information gap exists between those with the capabilities to leverage AI’s potential…
A couple of years back, I guided five hikers along the Laugavegur. All of them were over seventy. All of them had been serious hikers their whole lives, the kind of people who knew what a multi-day trek was supposed to feel like. By the end of the trail, one of them had been pulled off the route with a bad knee and shuttled back to civilization. Another had picked up COVID somewhere along the way and was crossing rivers with a high fever for the final two days. He pushed through because at that point in the trail there…
Waymo has issued a software update to its fleet of nearly 4,000 vehicles to help them avoid flooded roads as part of a recall announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday. But the company hasn’t fully solved the problem of how its vehicles behave in these conditions. In documents released by NHTSA, the federal safety regulator says Waymo is still “developing the final remedy for this recall.” The issue appears to be that Waymo’s robotaxis were slowing, but not stopping, when encountering flooded roads that they could not traverse, according to NHTSA. Robotaxis using both Waymo’s…
Older adults who cut back on dietary fat or reduced the amount of animal-based protein they consumed showed signs of becoming biologically younger, according to new research from the University of Sydney. The study, published in Aging Cell, found that adults between the ages of 65 and 75 experienced reductions in their estimated ‘biological age’ after following specific diets for just four weeks. Researchers say the findings suggest dietary changes later in life may quickly improve markers linked to aging and overall health. The research was led by Dr. Caitlin Andrews from the University of Sydney’s School of Life and…
Wise has filed to list its shares on Nasdaq as its primary venue while maintaining a secondary listing on the London Stock Exchange – and it’s doing it from a position of true strength. The primary listing moves from London to the US in May 2026, with Wise’s most recent fiscal year showing net revenue of approximately $2.5 billion, up 19% year on year. For a company that listed on the LSE in 2021 as one of London’s flagship tech IPOs, the move is a landmark moment. But it’s not a clean departure – Wise is relisting in London simultaneously,…

Instructure, the maker of the popular school information portal Canvas, said on Tuesday it has “reached an agreement” with the hackers who breached its systems twice, stole a huge amount of student and staff data, and disrupted thousands of schools that rely on the company’s software. ShinyHunters, a financially motivated cybercrime group, took credit for the April 29 data breach, claiming to have stolen student and staff data, including the personal information, of a total 275 million people. The hackers said they had compromised Canvas, which nearly 9,000 schools use to manage their students’ data and coursework. The hackers last…
