Frustration with slow broadband connections became a way of life during the pandemic, where a combination of home schooling and home working stretched local networks to the max. With fewer demands on home broadband lines now the children are back at school though, many of us are managing to run successful businesses using a home broadband connection. There are many reasons to consider doing this. Home broadband connections are cheaper on average, while accounts are easier to open, switch and manage. On the other hand, those who opt for business broadband may get faster speeds, quicker customer service and could find it…

Escherichia coli. Credit: Rocky Mountain Laboratories, NIAID, NIH E. coli bacteria may be far more capable of evolving antibiotic resistance than scientists previously thought, according to a new study published in Science on November 24. Led by SFI External Professor Andreas Wagner, the researchers experimentally mapped more than 260,000 possible mutations of an E. coli protein that is essential for the bacteria’s survival when exposed to the antibiotic trimethoprim. Over the course of thousands of highly realistic digital simulations, the researchers then found that 75% of all possible evolutionary paths of the E. coli protein ultimately endowed the bacteria with…

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve been working with some truly spectacular founders. One guy was a three-star general at one point. Another is in the U.S. because his research is so far ahead of the AI learning curve that the U.S. State Department issued him an O-1 extraordinary ability visa. Another had a doctorate and a stack of patents in his name. If you’re working at a VC firm, it isn’t unusual to meet such extraordinary people. You’ll see a steady stream of people waltzing in with pitch decks, prototypes and résumés. VCs are on a perpetual quest…

These awards are aimed at inspiring others with exceptional results that have made the leap out of the lab. By transferring their research to industry, these HiPEAC members have ensured that their work has a tangible impact on society.” Initiated in…
The attacker who drained $46 million from KyberSwap relied on a “complex and carefully engineered smart contract exploit” to carry out the attack, according to a social media thread by Ambient exchange founder Doug Colkitt. Colkitt labeled the exploit an “infinite money glitch.” According to him, the attacker took advantage of a unique implementation of KyberSwap’s concentrated liquidity feature to “trick” the contract into believing it had more liquidity than it did in reality.1/ Finished a preliminary deep dive into the Kyber exploit, and think I now have a pretty good understanding of what happened. This is easily the most complex and…
The University of Ottawa, together with national and international partners, has achieved a world first by manufacturing the first back-contact micrometric photovoltaic cells. The cells, with a size twice the thickness of a strand of hair, have significant advantages over conventional solar technologies, reducing electrode-induced shadowing by 95% and potentially lowering energy production costs by up to three times. The technological breakthrough — led by Mathieu de Lafontaine, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Ottawa and a part-time physics professor; and Karin Hinzer, vice-dean, research, and University Research Chair in Photonic Devices for Energy at the Faculty of Engineering…
