The event marks the failure of the Guy Fawkes plot on November 5 and remembers 17 martyrs burned at the stake during Queen Mary I’s reign.
Southover Bonfire Society members Emily Cook, 28, and Nathan Walter, 29, said the event remained an important local tradition.

Lewes Bonfire takes place this evening with more than 30,000 people expected to attend.
Public bodies urged people not to travel to Lewes because of overcrowding and safety concerns, with the event considered unsuitable for young children and dogs.
Train services will bypass Lewes and several nearby stations from 5pm on November 5 until the start of service on November 6, while road closures will begin at 4.45pm.
