A man is in hospital with serious injuries after an alleged assault in Co Down.

Police were called after a man was found with a head injury in the Main Street area of Newcastle in the early hours of Friday, June 5.

His injuries are thought to be serious.

A PSNI spokesman said: “A report was received at approximately 1.45am of a man with a head injury in the Main Street area – whose injuries were consistent with an alleged assault.

“Officers attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital by colleagues in the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment to injuries believed to be serious at this time.

“A 31-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and criminal damage and remains in custody.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information, including CCTV or other footage, to contact us on the 101 number, quoting reference 115 05/06/26.
