Born on December 8, 1973, Kim Medcalf attended Newstead Wood School for Girls in Orpington before going on to study law at the University of Bristol.

After graduating in 1995, Medcalf worked in sales and marketing and also as a nursery nurse, before deciding to change direction and pursue acting in her mid-20s.

At the age of 25, she left her job and enrolled on a one-year postgraduate course at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, setting herself a personal deadline to secure acting work or return to her former career.

Her breakthrough came almost immediately after drama school, when she was cast in EastEnders as Sam Mitchell, taking over the role from Danniella Westbrook.

Her first scenes aired in January 2002, with Sam arriving back in Walford from Marbella in one of the show’s reintroduction.

Medcalf’s initial stint on EastEnders ran for three years until 2005, during which she became a major fixture in the Square, appearing in hundreds of episodes and winning the most popular newcomer award at the National Television Awards in 2002.

Her portrayal of Sam saw the character entangled in some of the soap’s most explosive family and criminal storylines, including involvement in the fallout from Den Watts’ murder and her eventual dramatic exit in 2005, when Sam fled to Brazil after escaping imprisonment.

In 2022, she returned to EastEnders, once again stepping into the role of Sam Mitchell.

She remained on screen until January 2024 before stepping away again, later returning for a short, planned third stint beginning in December 2025.

In this most recent return, Sam’s storyline focused on a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, a plot developed in partnership with awareness organisations.

Her final scenes aired in May 2026, when Sam left Walford to join Grant Mitchell, played by Ross Kemp, in Portugal.

Away from the soap, Medcalf has built a stage career, including playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret in the West End and appearing in productions such as Hay Fever alongside Dame Judi Dench and The Great Gatsby.

She has also appeared in television dramas including Collateral, and competed in Comic Relief Does Fame Academy, where she finished as runner-up.

Medcalf is married with two children and took a five-year break from acting to focus on family life, later returning to both screen and stage work.
