Scott Brennan, production and design lead at The Good Coffee Cartel in Kinning Park, is preparing to take on his first Ironman 70.3 in Sweden as part of a deeply personal campaign.
Brennan’s mother Kay, 67, was diagnosed with grade 2 breast cancer in November 2024 and has since undergone a full mastectomy, six rounds of chemotherapy, and 15 sessions of radiotherapy
She continues to receive long-term immunotherapy treatment.
Scott said: “Through every stage of this fight, my mum has shown unbelievable strength and positivity.
“Even during the hardest moments, she’s been lifting everyone else around her.
“Watching that made me want to do something that reflected even a fraction of the perseverance and grit she shows every day.”
Scott’s challenge involves a 1.9km open water swim, a 90km cycle, and a half marathon run.
His nine-month training programme was designed to represent the length and intensity of Kay’s treatment journey.
Scott said: “I wanted it to represent the sacrifices and hardship she’s had to endure.
“It was also about giving her something positive to focus on during treatment—something we could all rally behind together.”
The shop has also launched a charity coffee in support of the campaign.
All profits from the product will go to Breast Cancer Now and the Alaw Ward oncology unit at Ysbyty Gwynedd Hospital in North Wales, where Kay received treatment.
Funds raised will support patient comfort and services, including chemotherapy support bags, cold cap treatments to reduce hair loss, remote patient monitoring, and improved seating.
The coffee itself was sourced through the Luzia Collective in Brazil, a network of female coffee producers focused on sustainability and collaboration.
Scott said: “We wanted the coffee to reflect my mum and everything she represents.
“Strong women supporting each other felt like the perfect fit.
“If you like coffee and hate cancer you won’t regret picking up a can.”
