Photographs capture the ongoing work to transform Montague Place, in Worthing.
The Worthing Borough Council project, which will see the area renamed as “Montague Gardens”, began in July and is being completed by local company Edburton Contractors.
The works will cost £3.1m and will be funded by £2.7m from the council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Strategic Fund, which is made up of payments made by developers building in the local area, and £400,000 of pooled business rates agreed with West Sussex County Council.
The work is set to be carried out in phases over 12 to 15 months.
Plans for the project were first revealed in 2024 and were created in collaboration with businesses and the community.
The council hope the changes will breathe new life into the town centre, attract more visitors and boost local businesses.
Work includes installing a stand-out Worthing place sign, a green living wall and a performance/sundeck area at the north end to welcome residents and visitors.
Photographs taken today, May 17, show the ongoing construction work as the project enters its tenth month since beginning.
New bins engraved with ‘Montague Gardens’ have arrived at the site and the grass areas can be seen starting to take shape.
As part of the project the area has been paved, with plans to plant up to 30 new trees, drought-resistant planting and a lawn area.
There will also be more lighting to increase safety in the evening, as well as provisions for outdoor dining, seating areas and a play area for children.
