At around 5.45am this morning (May 13) emergency services were called to Brighton beach to concerns for the welfare of a person in the water.
A short while after, the bodies of three young women were recovered from the sea near Madeira Drive, Sussex Police said.
Surfers Against Sewage had planned a “paddle out” protest from the beach on Saturday, but have since issued a statement to say the event has been cancelled in light of this morning’s incident.
A spokeswoman said: “Due to the tragic incident that took place in Brighton today, Surfers Against Sewage has made the decision to cancel the Paddle Out protest scheduled there on Saturday (16 May). This decision has been made out of respect for the local community and in light of the ongoing investigations.
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted, along with emergency responders dealing with this devastating situation and the Brighton community.
“All other Paddle Out protests taking place across the country will continue as planned. We remain committed to standing up for clean waters, communities and the protection of our environment.”
