On Friday (April 24), Hastings Borough Council confirmed that proposals to build 26 dwellings on land to the west of Rock Lane, Hastings, have now secured formal planning permission.
The most recent version of the proposals, put forward by Jerboa Homes Limited, had been granted by the council’s planning committee in July last year.
The approval had been contingent on the developer signing a legal agreement, which would secure affordable housing and financial contributions to library services and children’s play areas.
A draft version of the legal agreement was published on the council’s planning portal and the scheme was formally approved.
A previous application from the same developer had been refused in November 2020, due to concerns around its potential impact on the High Weald National Landscape (then the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
In July last year, officers said the scheme had been revised to address concerns. They said it would still result in ‘low level harm’ to the High Weald, but judged this would be outweighed by the benefits of additional housing.
The council had received 45 letters of objection. They argued the scheme would have an unacceptable impact on infrastructure and result in loss of green space.
Guestling Parish Council also submitted an objection, raising concerns around drainage and highways traffic.
The development is expected to include ten affordable homes.
