Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has urged the fans to get behind his players as they take on another high-flying side this Saturday.
The Gills will be well backed at Cambridge United, despite sitting in no-man’s land in League 2 and having suffered some poor results of late.
The away allocation has been sold out, which means more than 1,000 fans will be there backing the team.
“We have some cracking fans,” said the Gills boss, who came under fire from supporters after their 5-1 home loss to MK Dons in the week.
“You also get some real frustrated ones who just want success. I understand it. I understand getting booed off. I understand the songs about the players and me. I understand all that.
“That’s football. That comes with the territory. What I will say is I will do my absolute best to put this right. I’m hoping the players will do theirs, too.”
Commenting on the away sellout for his 16th-placed side, the Gills boss said: “It’s brilliant. I came in last year, in a similar position. My biggest disappointment is we’re not higher up than we were last year at this stage of the season.
“There is some improvement. The fans are fantastic for travelling away from home. I’ve not known a club like this since the Championship, when you get those sort of crowds travelling away.
“They are definitely above the level in their support.
“I’ve got to make the players above the level in their performances, especially after a game like [Tuesday] and I’ll do my best.”
He added: “Thank you, fans. I know you’re the heart of the club. I never want to have a go at anyone.
“Just get behind those boys. They need you and I’m sure we can get the result on Saturday.”
Gillingham have said they won’t be receiving any more tickets for the game at the Abbey Stadium and there won’t be any available on the day.
