The annual March of the Mermaids returned in all its colourful splendour today (July 4) as people donned marine inspired costumes for the event once again.
The free parade, which is in its 15th year, was led from Hove Lawns by Honour Mission, the “figurehead” of the march who praised how the community gets behind the event.

“It’s always had a lovely welcoming feel,” she said.
“It’s always a good time, a good day and a reason to dress up.
“It warms my heart to see the extent of the costumes.
“We don’t want it to be preachy. It’s got a happy vibe to it.”

She also spoke of her frustration about litter being left on Brighton beach and raised concerns about water pollution.
“We don’t like that,” she said.
The event is described as “a gathering of mermaids, mermen, sea creatures and seafaring folk” to highlight water pollution.
One mermaid, Ali Dolloso, has been taking part in the event for five years.

“I love mermaids,” she said.
“It’s a fun event and a part of Brighton.
“It’s part of my summer calendar.”
The march also raises money for charities, including the Wave Project, which gives young people aged between eight and 18 who need mental health support an opportunity to take to the waves and enjoy the sea.
Andy Ray has been taking part in the march for years and used recycled plastic to make a costume complete with a cape and a gun.

“No one wants microplastics in the sea,” said Andy, whose costume had “kill microplastics” emblazoned on the front.
Andy praised the event, saying: “There’s no police, no lorries, it doesn’t cost anything and the money goes to charities.”
The group finished at the Fortune of War pub, where spirits were high and the fun will continue until 8pm.
