People on Bexhill seafront raised the alarm with several 999 calls as daylight faded.
A wing foiler is a water sports enthusiast who uses a handheld, inflatable wing to catch the wind while standing on a small board equipped with a hydrofoil.
The hydrofoil lifts the board out of the water, creating a “flying” sensation with minimal drag. It merges elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and surfing.

Witnesses in Bexhill said the foiler was about 300 metres offshore and spent more time in the water than on the board.
HM Coastguard crews from Bexhill went to check what was happening.
With the person in trouble for so long and light fading, Solent Coastguard tasked a lifeboat from Hastings to assist.
When the lifeboat arrived, the foiler chose to swim ashore.

Rescuers said the wind dropped, leaving the person unable to get back to the beach on their board.
The foiler got back to shore safely and was unhurt.
Emergency crews thanked the public who raised the alarm, adding: “If you’re ever unsure, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
