On January 6, Lewes District Council’s planning committee approved plans to erect  “archway-type structures” at the pedestrian entrances to Newhaven Town railway station and the nearby ferry terminal.

The application also sought permission to replace two existing bus shelters with a larger “green roof” structure.

Councillors heard how each of the structures are intended to form part of a wider programme of public realm improvements in the area. These other works, which do not require planning permission, include landscaping, resurfacing and footway remodelling, officers said.

Officers said the application had only come to the committee as the council itself was the applicant, adding how no objections had been raised by residents or any local bodies.

While the committee unanimously approved the proposals, some councillors called for further works in the area.

They included Newhaven South councillor Graham Amy (Lib Dem) who called on the council to address flooding at the railway station’s car park.

For further information on the structures see application reference LW/25/0599 on the Lewes District Council website.
