The much-loved musician passed away on New Year’s Day

The funeral details have been announced for Northern Ireland punk legend Petesy Burns, who passed away on New Year’s Day aged 63.

The songwriter and guitarist’s death led to a wave of tributes after his family announced his death on social media, describing him as “the true Godfather of punk the legend.”

Petesy Burns played in a number of punk bands over the years, including Belfast band The Outcasts. A funeral notice for the musician said he will be buried on Wednesday, January 7 at 10.40am in Roselawn Crematorium.

His remains will repose at Browns Funeral Home, Oldpark Road, Belfast, with anyone wishing to pay their respects asked to do so on Sunday (1-5pm) or Monday (9am-7pm). Tuesday will be strictly private.

Wednesday’s service has been described as a “celebration of Petesy’s life.” It added: Petesy would like you to come as you are, no dress code. Afterwards friends and family are invited to celebrate Petesy at The Black Box from 1pm.”

Following the news of his passing, The Outcasts posted on their Facebook page: “Heartbreaking to hear of Petesy’s death today. No words can express the sadness of losing our old mucker. Condolences and thanks go out to Anthea for the care and dignity she gave him at the end.

“He was so loved in the punk world — and I mean the world. Everyone who met him loved him, but especially here. Rest in peace, brother.”

Popular radio presenter and DJ Johnny Hero said the news of Petesy’s passing was “terrible.” He said: “Petesy has passed away. A talented, funny, decent man. We have definitely lost one of the good guys.”

Belfast pub The Harp Bar shared a tribute to the much-loved musician on social media, writing: “Words fail me at this time to share about the passing of one of the most beautiful human beings around … our much loved Petesy.

“EVERYBODY LOVED PETESY. My heart goes out to Anthea and all the family at this very sad time.”

Fans and fellow musicians have shared their memories online. One commentator wrote: “The man was a legend. Many a time he took a fledgling me and the band under his wing. Privileged to have shared a van and a stage with the fella. Plus he introduced me to curried rolls in Ballbrigan. Onto the next adventure.”

Another added: “I had the privilege to get to know Petesy when we organised The Outcasts’ first show together on the occasion of my band’s 40-year jubilee. He had been so nice, helpful, and easy to deal with, and meeting him in person was even more impressive than I’d expected. A true gent.”
