Kent’s border has long been the catalyst for crippling identity crises across our county. Which should you claim to live in? Buzzing, cosmopolitan south-east London, or our picturesque Garden of England?
Over the last century, the border between Kent and London has shifted dramatically, fuelling a long-lasting debate over where it actually is. You may not know that many places in Greater London did not use to be part of the city and many who live there feel passionately that they reside in Kent.
Even today, confusion remains for a few towns including Woolwich and Bexley. The county has shrunk as London continued to absorb towns.
There are still many people with family and friends living either side of the border, coupled with those who travel between the two, and as far as we’re concerned, they’re an honorary part of Kent. But what do you think? Have your say in the poll above and air your thoughts in the comments below.
The capital has grown from where it started as the small City of London to a huge 1,569 square kilometre city and suburbs. Prior to the London Government Act 1963, Bexley, Bromley and Greenwich all lay outside of the County of London, which formed in the late 1880s.
