Thomas Smith of Blakes Way, Eastbourne, was charged today, December 10, with seven counts of encouragement of terrorism, contrary to section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006. 

The 33-year-old was arrested by Counter Terrorism Policing South East officers along with a 27-year-old woman from Hailsham and two other men from Eastbourne, aged 36 and 41,  on Thursday, December 4 .

The arrests were part of a planned operation, supported by officers from Sussex Police. 

The 36-year-old man was released with no further action today.

The 41-year-old man and the 27-year-old woman were also released with no further action yesterday, December 9.

Smith was remanded in custody to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow, December 11.  

After the arrests, Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Steve Rayland said: “I am aware that investigations of this nature can cause people in the local community to feel concerned, but I’d like to stress the arrests form part of a planned operation to keep people in our communities safe.

“Counter Terrorism Policing South East is leading this investigation with support from our officers in Sussex Police.

“People living in the local area may notice an increased police presence while search activity takes place, which is routine in cases of this nature.

“Please speak to a police officer if you have any concerns or any information which may be relevant.”
