Counter-terror cops arrested three men and a woman in Brighton and Eastbourne on the morning of December 4.

A 27-year-old woman from Hailsham and three men from Eastbourne aged 33, 36, and 41, were taken into custody during the planned operation.

All four were still in custody on Monday morning, a police spokesman said.

One of the men arrested in Eastbourne was taken out of an address wearing a white hoodie after heavily armed counter-terror officers broke his door open.

Counter Terrorism Policing South East said the arrests formed part of a planned intelligence-led operation into “extreme right-wing terrorism.”

An eyewitness said he feared for his safety when he saw men with guns.

The man, who asked not to be named, said: “I saw three cars and a van pull up and they were getting guns out of the back.

“They started walking along to this property. Police vans closed all the road.

“There was a bit of banging and the police were shouting for someone to come to the front door.

“I feared for my safety.

“There were a few people there, getting out their phones. We were asked to move on.

“Then man was brought out of the house in handcuffs.”

Sussex Police Assistant Chief Constable Steve Rayland said: “I am aware that investigations of this nature can cause people in the local community to feel concerned, but I’d like to stress the arrests form part of a planned operation to keep people in our communities safe.

“Counter Terrorism Policing South East is leading this investigation with support from our officers in Sussex Police.

“People living in the local area may notice an increased police presence while search activity takes place, which is routine in cases of this nature.

“Please speak to a police officer if you have any concerns or any information which may be relevant.”

A spokesman for CTPSE said at the time: “Officers from Counter Terrorism Policing South East have arrested four people on suspicion of terrorism offences in Sussex today.

“The arrests by specialist officers took place in the Eastbourne and Brighton areas and form part of a planned intelligence-led operation into extreme right-wing terrorism.

“All were arrested under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000 and are currently in police custody.

“Search activity at residential properties is currently ongoing.”
