Chris Ward Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven has been announced as a Cabinet Office parliamentary secretary this evening.

The Cabinet Office is a ministerial department of the government and is responsible for supporting the prime minister and Cabinet.

Sir Keir Starmer is carrying out a major reshuffle, including wide-ranging changes at the Home Office, as he seeks to tighten his grip on immigration and draw a line under Angela Rayner’s resignation.

Chris Ward was born and grew up in Brighton and was formerly an aide and speech writer to Keir Starmer for six years.

Mr Ward was selected to represent Labour in the seat on May 31,2024 after Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who had held the seat since 2017, was suspended from the party two days prior.

He won 17,893 votes and had a majority of almost 10,000.

The changes follow a sweeping Cabinet-level shake-up on Friday after former deputy prime minister Ms Rayner quit government for breaching the ministerial code over the purchase of a £800,000 flat in Hove earlier this year.

Yvette Cooper was replaced as Home Secretary by Shabana Mahmood and took over as Foreign Secretary from David Lammy, who has been made Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.

Peter Kyle MP for Hove and Portslade was a beneficiary of the reshuffle being promoted to Secretary of State for Business and Trade.
