Improvements to Littlehampton’s seafront between East Beach, South Terrace and Windmill Road got underway last autumn.

The £7.2 million revamp includes new toilets and beach showers, improvements to the car park, including electric vehicle charging points, walkways and new sustainable planting.

A new water play area and a pop-up marketplace off Banjo Road with four fixed stalls will also come to the beach.

Arun District Council has now confirmed Neilcott Construction is “nearing the completion” of the scheme.

The new colourful toilet block has all its doors fitted. The council said symbols will be added to these and final fittings are being fixed inside.

“Subject to tests and building control sign off it is hoped to open these to the public later next week,” a council spokesman said.

“Once the new building is open the temporary toilets will be removed.

“On the main site the final drainage connection has been made and, following successful testing and inspection, will mean completion is not too far away.

“The contractor is also tidying areas which could not be finished off while construction access was needed, including surfacing, shaping soil and cleaning. Signage is being produced containing safety and contact information.

“We know people are keen to experience the new facilities so opening up the site is our priority. It is not the right time of year to establish grass seed so there will be areas, particularly around the edge, which will be seeded later in the year.  The focus has been on getting the central area of the site ready for people to enjoy.”
