Swing Field Unit were due to perform on the Brighton Beach Bandstand on Kings Road between 2-4pm this afternoon (May 9).

However, the event was cancelled after the band’s bass player suddenly died.

The group shared their tribute on Facebook. It said: “In memory of our bass player Frank Glencairn who we lost tragically and suddenly.

“We’ll meet again dear friend.”

A sign was displayed on the bandstand informing members of the public cancellation.

It said: “Event cancellation notice: VE80 band performance. We’re very sorry to announce that today’s scheduled VE80 Swing into Victory band performance has been cancelled.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

A resident told The Argus how they’d travelled down for the event.

They said: “It’s a bit disappointing; I’ve travelled down from Lewes.

“I think VE day is so important because we wouldn’t be here today without those who fought. People should have to remember and respect them.”

The performance was part of a variety of events held across Brighton and Hove to mark the 80th anniversary of VE day.

Yesterday evening, a beacon lighting ceremony was held at the Peace Statue on Kingsway.

Hundreds turned out for the national moment of remembrance, bringing together the city’s cadet forces, uniformed services, and veterans.
