Worry has grown over the situation in Warlock Road in recent years but that feeling of unease was only exacerbated when a large tree fell days before Christmas.

It then meant Storm Eowyn would prove to be a particularly troubling weather event for people in the street in January, as strong winds wreaked havoc in the area.

Councillor James MacLaren, a Conservative representative for the village, has urged Renfrewshire Council to take preventative action at the location, which is also home to Bridge of Weir Primary School.

He said: “The storm in January certainly highlighted the problem and a tree came down in December, so it’s obviously concerning for residents.

“There are trees alongside the fence of the primary school, there are trees inside the grounds and then you’ve got the field beyond that.

“But generally, I think it’s the trees alongside the primary school that are worrying residents the most.

“All of these trees were supposed to have been inspected before the storm and before the incident in December but still trees have come down.

“The one that is leaning is of major concern to them but there are others that have huge branches that come out across the road.

“Surely they could take them off and make those trees safer and give everybody a little bit more peace of mind.

“I think it would be better to take down the one that is leaning and replace it.

“I can imagine there will be a few parents that are concerned when they take their kids to the school or when they hear a storm or windy weather is coming.

“Some of the debris that fall out of the tree could easily knock you out.

“The situation has made residents quite anxious.”

The local authority said it “regularly surveys and inspects” trees in Renfrewshire as part of its proactive management policy and, where necessary, follow-up work is carried out to maintain safety and environmental standards.

A council spokesperson added: “Trees on Warlock Road previously underwent a visual tree assessment stage two inspection by a qualified tree inspector and were scheduled for reinspection in 2026.

“However, in response to concerns raised by the public, the service has brought this reinspection forward to 2025 as a precautionary measure.

“Following the impact of Storm Eowyn, the service has initiated a programme to reinspect trees across Renfrewshire to identify and address any storm-related damage.

“The council also runs an annual inspection programme for the school estate, ensuring trees within school grounds are proactively assessed and maintained.”
