The ‘Growing Your Teenager’ programme, developed by Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council, and Sussex Police, aims to increase parents’ knowledge of potential issues their children may face as they transition from primary to secondary school.

The course, which was piloted in 2023, was initially delivered at Tanbridge House School in Horsham.

It will now be extended to all secondary schools in the Horsham District.

The course will cover a range of topics, including anxiety, stress, drugs and alcohol, low self-esteem, and online safety.

It will consist of a mix of presentations and interactive discussions for parents.

The Forest School and Millais School will have sessions on Monday, July 7, Monday, September 15, and Monday, September 22, from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Tanbridge House School and Bohunt School will have sessions on Thursday, July 17, Thursday, September 11, and Thursday, September 18, from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Paul Anderson, director of communities at Horsham District Council, said: “We were delighted that our pilot programme was so well received and that we can now move forward with the positive feedback received to roll out the programme again to additional secondary schools in the district.

“We do understand how challenging it can sometimes be as a parent with teenage children and are pleased that this course provides so many useful tools to help people understand the changes their young person is going through at this time in their lives.

“We are striving to help achieve the best outcomes for both parents and young people entering adolescence.”

One former attendee said: “It was brilliant.

“It was extremely reassuring to know there are local professional services out there to support parents and teens.

“Getting advice on communication with them and being aware of the main dangers to look out for going forward was really good.

“Really worthwhile, thank you.”
