Portland Road in Hove was closed yesterday afternoon and evening for several hours as armed police units attended reports of a man with a weapon.
Sussex Police has now revealed the force was seeking to arrest a man as ordered by Essex Crown Court.
The man was reported to have refused to come to the door and was believed to be in possession of a firearm.
Negotiations took place between officers and the man before he was arrested.

The road was closed from Westbourne Street to the A2023 Sackville Road.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “Police attended an address in Portland Road, Hove, on Thursday (March 6) at 2.25pm to serve an arrest warrant on a man that was issued by Exeter Crown Court.
“He refused to come to the door when officers attended and was believed to be in possession of a firearm.

“Several hours later, the man was safely arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear.
“He was taken to hospital to be checked over before going to custody.
“We thank the public for their patience while we dealt with the ongoing incident.”
Sussex Police reported that the road reopened in a statement issued at 11.45pm yesterday.
