Gillingham’s man-of-the-moment Robbie McKenzie hopes their midweek performance and his super strike is something for them to build on.
McKenzie’s stunning finish from 30 yards was a must-see effort viewed by thousands on social media, a goal that clinched a point for the Gills at league leaders Walsall and capped a positive performance.
Building on that midweek outing will now be key for the Gills and they take on Crewe today (Saturday) at Priestfield.
“It’s something to build on,” said the midfielder.
“I feel like Tuesday night’s performance was more of what we want and how we want to play. A point was the least we deserved.
“We’ve got a little bit of confidence back.
“I’d say it was one of the better (performances this season). It was more of a fully-team performance.
“We all pulled together and now that’s got to be our baseline of what we’re going to perform like until the end of the season.”
It’s five goals for McKenzie this season now, the second top scorer at the club this season.
Recalling the strike, he said: “It was a little bit of instinct, really, when I got the ball. I just had to hit it.
“It was a nice feeling. I’ve chipped in with a fair few, so that’s nice, and hopefully I can continue.
“I don’t want to stop at five. I want to keep going and see how many I can get.
“I think that goal has settled everyone down in a way, and made the people believe that we are a good team and we can come from behind, which we haven’t done a lot this season.
“I feel like it just reward for our performance. We deserved at least a point and we got that. That’s got to be the benchmark now.”
The Gills had come in for some criticism from the manager before the game after last weekend’s loss at Barrow but they responded in the right manner.
He said: “Sometimes that’s how it needs to be. I think people need to hear the things they don’t want to hear and it obviously worked because we’ve got a good reaction.
“It’s pretty simple with the gaffer, he just wants hard work and dedication, so that’s what you’ve got to do.”
