The vote took place on February 13 at the Estate Office Board Room in Brighton Marina, with an overwhelming majority in favour for Brighton and Hove City Council to adopt the plan.

92 per cent of the 248 votes cast by residents and 8 of the 9 votes cast in the business referendum were in favour of the plan being adopted by the council.

(Image: UMPF) At the Full Council meeting on October 24 it was agreed that, in the event that more than half of the residents and half of businesses vote to support the Neighbourhood Plan, the council will formally ‘make’ the plan.

Councillor Liz Loughran, chairwoman of the planning committee, said: “I would like to thank the Brighton Marina Neighbourhood Forum for their work in developing this plan in consultation with their local community. And, of course, the residents and business people whose votes will help shape the future of their community.

“Following the Hove Station Area and Rottingdean Parish referendums, this will be the third part of the city to have a ‘Made’ Neighbourhood Plan.

“I hope other areas will soon follow suit and bring forward their own plans.”

The neighbourhood plan will set policies for development and create a shared vision for the area up to 2030.

Brighton Marina was considered in Brighton and Hove City Council Development Plan, which was first published in 2016.

The council had set out that provisions would be made for additional development in the designated area, including 1,938 residential units (including the 853 units already granted planning permission for the outer harbour, 1000 residential units allocated for the inner harbour and 85 residential units allocated for the Gas Works site), further retail floor space, employment space, leisure and recreation space, a community building, an NHS health facility and a primary school close to the area.
