Gillingham chairman Brad Galinson has described their latest performance as an embarrassment.
Manager John Coleman didn’t hold back with his criticism of the players, after a 3-0 loss at Barrow dropped the Gills further down the League 2 table, and the American owner was fuming too.
Report: Barrow 3 Gillingham 0
Last season saw the Gills fall short of their promotion objective – one which cost Neil Harris and Stephen Clemence their jobs – and it’s looking like another write-off campaign for the club who are now looking uncomfortably over their shoulder at the relegation places.
Early hope under former boss Mark Bonner soon evaporated and it’s been going from bad to worse. John Coleman – a man with 25 years experience in management – admitted even he’s struggling to get this team to show some fight and desire.
Mr Galinson posted a message on social media shortly after their loss at Barrow.
“Embarrassed. Despondent. Frustrated,” were the three words he chose to sum up his feelings.
He added: “All I can take away from that is I am so proud and thankful for the brave souls who travelled I don’t know how many hours to support us.
“We are still Gillingham FC. We are still a tight community of people who want to be proud of our team. We are clearly not even close to that right now. Gotta figure this out. I am not a proud man right now.”
Galinson and managing director Joe Comper will answer fans’ questions during a Q& A hosted by the ME7 Podcast on Monday night.
Gillingham were backed by 227 fans at Carlisle, many of them making overnight stops or setting off on the supporters’ coach at 6.30am on Saturday morning for the long journey north to Cumbria.
They had little to cheer at Barrow.
Coleman had spoken in the week about his desire to get the team playing “front-foot football” but there was little of that attacking intent on show. Home keeper Paul Farman didn’t have a proper save to make throughout the match.
The Gills are away at league leaders Walsall on Tuesday night.
