No property flooding is anticipated in the government warning but “low lying land may remain flooded”.

The flood alert covers the River Darent from Westerham to Dartford, including Brasted, Sundridge, Chipstead, Dunton Green, Otford, Eynsford and South Darenth.

River levels will continue to rise until January 29, particularly in the Hawley area.

People are advised to avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water or using low-lying footpaths and bridges near local watercourses.

The warning comes after Storm Herminia hit the UK with 83mph winds just after Storm Eowyn killed two.

The Environment Agency has issued more than 50 flood warnings, mostly for the country’s south-west.

172 less serious flood alerts have been issued for much of England – including London – as forecasters warn of up to 80mm of rain in some areas.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said: “We are closely monitoring the situation and checking rivers for blockages in the area.”
