Gillingham striker Josh Andrews missed out at the weekend after picking up another injury – one of two strikers in the treatment room.

Andrews has just returned to full fitness in an injury-hit first year with the Gills and was looking forward to making an impact under manager John Coleman.

He’s not the only striker to be hit by injury, with Marcus Wyllie expected to be unavailable for the next six weeks.

It’s a blow for new boss John Coleman who is currently assessing the squad and looking to find a way of getting the team scoring.

“We’ve had a problem with the strikers,” said Coleman, after Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Doncaster.

“We’ve lost Marcus Wyllie and we’ve lost Josh Andrews in the space of four days.

“Oli Hawkins is just getting back to fitness and we couldn’t have risked him.

“[Elliott Nevitt] was struggling with a groin. We wouldn’t have wanted to take him off normally. We took him off. We’ve got a lack of strikers. That’s not making excuses.”

Coleman said on Saturday that they were waiting on a scan for Andrews and said Wyllie “might be about six weeks away.”

The Gillingham manager still has Peterborough United striker Jacob Wakeling at the club.

He joined on a season-long loan but didn’t feature for former boss Mark Bonner in his last six matchday squads and new boss Coleman also left him out.

Wakeling, 23, scored on his debut against Carlisle United in the season opener but hasn’t found the net since. It’s one goal in 15 for the Peterborough striker.

Coleman wants to have a look at the forward before deciding whether to keep him for the remainder of the season.

“We’re still assessing him,” said the manager.

“We’ll look at Jacob in the next week or so and see if he fits the profile for what we can do going forward.”

The Gills have added Asher Agbinone to the squad and the Crystal Palace loanee was a positive on another disappointing afternoon at Priestfield on Saturday.

He looked to be troubled by a back injury in the match which Coleman put down to a back spasm, which he played through.
