Gillingham’s former boss Stephen Clemence is out of work again after being sacked by Barrow.
Clemence was appointed head coach of Gillingham’s League 2 rivals Barrow in the summer – his second job as no.1 man.
He was axed as Gills boss at the end of last season after failing to get them into the play-offs.
Barrow enjoyed a good start to the season and were sitting top of the table in late September before being leapfrogged by the Gills after they lost 2-0 at Priestfield.
Clemence’s side had just had a big day out at Chelsea in the League Cup.
Since then, it’s been a tough ride. Just two league wins in 17 games saw Barrow drop to 17th place in the table, one below the Gills.
Clemence’s last game on Saturday was a 2-0 loss at Swindon.
A club statement, from chairman Paul Hornby said: “Stephen came in over the summer and we had high hopes to build on his considerable coaching ability and reputation.
“We’ve built a strong squad of players together and enjoyed some memorable early success including our Carabao Cup exploits.
“Stephen has always conducted himself with great dignity and professionalism but unfortunately our recent extended run of poor results has led us to the decision that it was time to make a change.
“We would like to thank Stephen for his hard work and dedication to the club and wish him well for the future.”
Assistant manager Robbie Stockdale – who was no.2 to Clemence at Gillingham – is also leaving.
Gillingham head to Barrow in early February.
