However, a spokeswoman for Brighton Palace Pier confirmed no such event was taking place and that the pier would be closed from 5.30pm.

People also shared a post by Brighton Palace Pier advertising its New Year’s Eve brunch in Palm Court at 10am, appearing to be confused by the fireworks pictured in the background – despite the post stating the pier will be closed from 5.30pm onwards.

It’s also possible that confusion was garnered from a similar-sounding attraction at New Brighton Pier in New Zealand.

The structure in Christchurch hosts a Winter Fireworks Spectacular in July.
