And we can also forget just how long ago the classic episodes we can binge on whenever we like were released.

Alarmingly, Friends turns 30 today. It has been three whole decades since The One Where It All Began aired on NBC on September 22, 1994.

But before we all whip out the party hats and dance fully-clothed in a fountain like the six friends do in the credits, to celebrate 30 years of this favourite TV show, let’s take this time to be a little bit childish and think for a moment how different things could have been.

Say for example we switch Chandler, Joey, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe from New York City to Brighton and Hove. How would things change?

1. For a start, Rachel wouldn’t be working at the New York department store Bloomingdale’s. She sadly lost her job at the Ralph Lauren concession when Debenhams in Churchill Square closed and now works at AllSaints in East Street.

2. That will be handy when she’s dating Ross as she’s just a short hop on the 27 bus up to the Booth Museum where he works as a palaeontologist.

3. But we all know he screws things up cheating on Rachel during a drunken night in Revenge while they were “on a break”.

5. He would return home each day to a happy Monica who has trained as a vegetarian chef and is never short of work in Brighton’s many plant-based eateries. She’s now working at Terre à Terre.

6. They would live in a Regency townhouse converted into flats in Seven Dials – and would definitely be struggling to pay rent.

7. Joey, a budding actor, would be desperate for a part in Grace when TV crews roll in.

8. … and end up getting cast as a character who gets killed in the first episode.

Joey would want to star in ITV’s Grace which is filmed in and around Brighton (Image: Andrew Gardner / The Argus) 9. They would live across the road from a Brighton character like Birdyman rather than Ugly Naked Guy.

10. Joey and Chandler wouldn’t be gambling their flat for Knicks courtside tickets, it would have to be one of the boxes at the Amex for a big match against Crystal Palace.

11. And forget hanging out in the coffee shop Central Perk, it would have to be Trading Post or The Flour Pot.

Tim Bat, or Birdyman, would be their neighbour

12. …Or maybe Dead Wax Social, a vinyl bar, which would be great for Phoebe who busks in Bond Street and sings Smelly Cat at their open mic nights.

13. Phoebe would also sing at Music Hall on the prom where the gang would make the most of summer evenings on the beach.

14. A trip to London wouldn’t be quite so exciting, so perhaps they all have to go to New York for Ross to get married to a Stacy or Zoe.

15. Finally, we think Ross and Chandler would have been readers of The Argus rather than The New York Times.

The crew never got the chance to film The One Where It’s Set In Brighton and Hove, but its nice to imagine what could have been.

Happy 30th birthday to Friends and all those celebrating the milestone.
