On July 8, 2024, at approximately 9:10 p.m., George McAvoy entered a takeaway restaurant on Broomfield Road in Barmulloch. Intoxicated and incoherent, McAvoy was seen opening and closing the front door while making nonsensical remarks about fighting.
After falling to the ground and remaining there for about 10 minutes, McAvoy grew agitated and kicked a door frame. He then managed to pull down a storage cabinet, causing it and its contents to crash to the floor.
McAvoy subsequently picked up the cabinet and hurled it at a glass freezer, shattering it into several pieces. He then entered the kitchen area behind the counter where staff were working. Fearing for their safety, the employees exited the premises and called the police.
McAvoy, who had removed his jumper, continued his erratic behavior. When officers arrived, they found him lying on the floor behind the counter, with damage evident to the glass door and window as well as scattered items on the floor. At about 9:35 p.m., McAvoy was cautioned and charged, and checks revealed he was violating bail conditions.
During transportation to London Road police station, McAvoy shouted and swore at officers, using offensive language. He was cautioned again but persisted in his aggressive behavior, making further threats.
Appearing recently at Glasgow Sheriff Court, McAvoy pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including aggressive behavior, damaging property, and breaching bail conditions. His lawyer stated McAvoy had no recollection of the incident but acknowledged his presence. Sheriff Simone Sweeney sentenced McAvoy to 80 days of house arrest from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. and placed him on a 12-month community payback order with social work supervision.
