Following the collapse of Carpetright last month, Bensons for Beds has acquired nearly 20 of its stores. Carpetright, which was saved from administration in July, had to cut over 1,500 jobs. The retailer, headquartered in Essex, was purchased by rival Tapi for an undisclosed amount, saving more than 300 jobs and 54 stores.
Before its collapse, Carpetright operated approximately 270 stores across the UK and employed around 1,800 people. Bensons for Beds has now taken over 19 locations previously operated by Carpetright.
Nick Collard, CEO of Bensons for Beds, stated, “Expanding our store footprint is a key growth priority, and we are excited to take on these 19 store units. This move supports our plan to increase our store count from 162 to over 200 in the coming years.”
Bensons for Beds aims to start operations in these locations within a few months and hopes to create job opportunities for former Carpetright employees. The acquired stores are located in Aberdeen, Ashton, Belfast, Canterbury, Edmonton, Exeter, Irvine, Kettering, Old Kent Road, Oldbury, Portsmouth, Salisbury, Slough, Sutton, Torquay, Bath, Eastbourne, Gillingham, and Solihull.
Collard further commented on the challenging market conditions for high-ticket items but expressed confidence in Bensons for Beds’ progress and market share gains.
In its most recent accounts, Carpetright reported a revenue decline to £372.6 million from £493.2 million and a reduced pre-tax loss of £23.1 million. Bensons for Beds, backed by Alteri Investors, reported a reduction in pre-tax losses to £19.9 million, with revenue increasing to £257.4 million. Source link
