Tommy Fleetwood asserts that winning an Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024 would rank among his greatest achievements in golf as he gears up for what he describes as “the most amazing event in the world.”
The British golfer, who represented Team GB in Tokyo three years ago, returns to Le Golf National, aiming to recapture the spirit of Europe’s memorable Ryder Cup victory at the venue in 2018.
Accompanied by British teammate Matt Fitzpatrick, Fleetwood joins the world’s top golfers in Paris for an event often seen as secondary to the sport’s major tournaments. However, Fleetwood, 33, believes that perceptions are shifting. After Team GB’s Justin Rose and recent Open champion Xander Schauffele claimed gold in Rio and Tokyo, respectively, he hopes the next generation will aspire to follow in their footsteps.
Fleetwood, who finished tied for 16th in Japan while Schauffele, Rory Sabbatini from Slovakia, and Pan Cheng-tsung from Chinese Taipei occupied the podium, is eager for the event he cherishes to gain status comparable to The Open and The Masters.
“My generation never viewed the Olympics as a realistic goal, given it wasn’t part of our sports world growing up,” said Fleetwood, who will compete against Rory McIlroy (Ireland), Scottie Scheffler (USA), and Jon Rahm (Spain) in the upcoming tournament.
“For us, the Olympics wasn’t a target because it wasn’t an Olympic sport during most of our childhood. But I see it now as sport in its purest form and the most amazing event in the world.
“The previous gold medalists, Justin and Xander, have been fantastic for the sport, and I’m sure young players will start dreaming of it more.
“If I were to win gold, it would stand alongside any other major accomplishment I’ve had. It’s truly special and the ultimate sporting event.”Source link
