“Network Rail and AmcoGiffen Commence Foundation Work for New Footbridge at Hairmyres Station Relocation

Network Rail and their contractor AmcoGiffen are currently installing the foundations for a new footbridge at the relocated Hairmyres station as part of the East Kilbride Enhancements project. Over the next two weeks, engineers will use a 58-tonne piling rig to drive 24 steel pile foundations into depths ranging from 2m to 5m. These foundations will support the new footbridge and lifts, ensuring step-free access to the platforms for passengers.

The project includes a double-tracked section between platforms to improve train punctuality. Once completed, the new Hairmyres station will be situated approximately 600 meters west of its current location. Network Rail’s senior programme manager, Paul Reilly, emphasized the significance of the piling phase in enabling the construction of an accessible station environment, featuring lift towers, a bridge deck, and a new station building expected to emerge over the coming months.

Scheduled for completion by summer 2025, the Hairmyres station redevelopment aims to provide a modern and accessible facility for passengers. It is part of a broader £140 million Scottish Government initiative to decarbonize passenger services across Scotland’s Railway, which also includes electrification efforts along the East Kilbride to Glasgow line. Recent project milestones include the extension of East Kilbride station’s platform and the completion of bridge rebuilds along the route.

The East Kilbride Enhancement project is on track for full completion by December 2025.”
