Emergency services responded to a distress call regarding a teenager’s safety in the water at a West Wittering beach near Chichester around 1 pm on Tuesday.
The young man was part of a group from Uxbridge College in west London, visiting the area to mark the end of their term. According to a college spokesperson, he encountered difficulties in the sea, and tragically, efforts to rescue him were unsuccessful.
He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Sussex Police have informed his family.
Principal Dylan McTaggart of Uxbridge College expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This was a tragic accident that has deeply affected our community. Our immediate focus is on providing support to all those impacted. We have arranged for trained counselors and will ensure ongoing support for our community in the coming days and weeks. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, and we kindly request respect for their privacy during this time of mourning.”
Detective Inspector Darren Taylor of Sussex Police noted that an investigation, supported by the Health and Safety Executive, is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. He extended sincere condolences to the boy’s loved ones, calling it a heartbreaking time.
A spokesperson from the private West Wittering Estate shared that despite lifeguards’ and emergency services’ swift response and efforts, including deploying jet skis, the teenager succumbed to the incident. The family has been notified, and their thoughts are with them during this challenging period.
