Gillingham have transferred defender Scott Malone to League 1 club Crawley Town.
Malone, 33, was one of four players listed for transfer by Gillingham this summer. The former Millwall defender played 48 games for the Gills last season, although many appearances in the latter part of the campaign were as a substitute, with Max Clark taking his spot in the starting lineup. Malone was awarded Gillingham’s 2023/24 goal-of-the-season for his impressive volley against Sutton United.
Despite making four new signings in the off-season, Gillingham needs to balance their books to bring in more players, making Malone’s departure timely.
Malone has signed a one-year deal with Crawley Town. Expressing his enthusiasm, he said, “I am really excited for the opportunity to play for Crawley and I am delighted to be here. I have wanted to play for this club for a few years now. I married into the area ten years ago as my wife is from Broadfield, so it has always been a dream of mine. I am also happy to have got the deal done so early.”
Crawley Town, who won promotion last season through the League 2 play-offs, have seen several key players depart, including former Gills defender Will Wright. Gillingham’s players will return to training on Monday.
