“Exploring Cumbernauld’s Past: Unveiling the Archives of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation invites history enthusiasts to participate in cataloging and preserving the town’s historical records.
With a generous grant from Archives Revealed, the project has appointed a dedicated archivist to organize a vast collection of documents, including minutes, reports, photographs, and architectural drawings that chronicle the inception and management of Cumbernauld New Town.
Volunteers passionate about history will have the chance to delve into the town’s rich heritage, collaborate with like-minded individuals, and contribute to valuable tasks at the North Lanarkshire Heritage Centre in Motherwell.
Heather Liddle, the active and creative communities manager at North Lanarkshire Council, expressed, “Cataloging and preserving this collection will provide valuable insights into the work of the Cumbernauld Development Corporation, making Cumbernauld’s cultural, architectural, environmental, educational, and social aspects accessible to a broader audience.”
Project archivist Carly Davidson emphasized the opportunity for volunteers to acquire new skills, connect with their community, and play a part in educating and inspiring others. The roles offered are flexible, with comprehensive training and support provided.
To learn more and get involved, email: volunteernl@northlan.gov.uk or visit the archive team at Cumbernauld Gala Day on Saturday, June 29, to explore the project and discuss volunteer opportunities related to the New Town’s history.”
