The crash happened between the Wrotham Road junction in Gravesend junction and the Ebbsfleet junction in Swanscombe at about 8.15pm.

Shortly before 9pm the road was shut entirely leading to massive queues between Pepperhill junction and Spring Head Interchange.

Cars queued back to Bluewater and Gravesend in either direction respectively.

National Highways warned drivers the road would be shut “for a protracted period”.

Police, paramedics, the fire service and the air ambulance all attended the scene, alongside National Highways teams.

It is not yet known how many vehicles have been involved or whether anyone is seriously injured.
