It had been operating from a temporary cabin since the start of refurbishment of the lido in 2022.

The new library has had a full restoration complete with comfortable furniture and a new layout.

Library officer Glenn Stevens said: “We are very pleased to be in this brand new beautiful library that is part of the lido building in Saltdean.

“We have a huge range of books from crime to fiction, non-fiction, a teenage section, books in other languages and books for people with dyslexia.”

Readers can enjoy a wider selection of books of all genres and audiobooks.

There is a family area with a selection of new children’s books and sensory and interactive elements.

Children and parents or carers will also be welcomed to regular story time and activity sessions that encourage play as well as reading for pleasure.

There are IT and study spaces available throughout the library with computers, printers and a height adjustable desk for wheelchair users or those who prefer to stand.

Already hosting the local knitting group, the library wants to encourage all groups and people on their own to use the space to “come together and share ideas”.

Councillor Leslie Pumm, chairman of Brighton and Hove City Council’s equalities, community safety and human rights committee, said: “It’s wonderful to see that the dedicated Saltdean community, who fought so hard to preserve and enhance the historic lido building, finally gets to enjoy their wonderful library.

“The reopening of the library marks another important milestone in restoration of Saltdean Lido, which I have no doubt will become a vibrant hub for residents and visitors alike.

“A congratulations, as well as a thank you, belongs to the volunteers at Saltdean Lido CIC and the devoted library staff that made sure Saltdean had a strong library presence even during the times of restoration.”

The library is the latest opening in the refurbished lido building. The ballrooms reopened earlier this year.
